11 Feb Breaking Free from Pornography
Breaking free from pornography comes by controlling our thoughts as the Bible teaches us to. Our thoughts affect us tremendously!
Jesus told us that if a man looks on a woman to lust after her, he commits adultery in his heart (Matthew 5:28). His statement reminds us that misdirected sexuality, fantasy, and lust (sexual desire for someone other than one’s spouse) have implications that are serious and far reaching! In fact, our thoughts and thought patterns control our lives.
This is why pornography is such a powerful, yet destructive force. Since the addictive components of porn are physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual, when the hooks are in, breaking free from pornography may take some real God-power. But that power is available!
The Bible tells us that the weapons we use in our war of faith are not natural— but they are mighty through God to demolish wrong thoughts, arguments, and the enemy’s lies! We are able to have authority over every wrong thought, by bringing it into the obedience of Christ! (2 Corinthians 4:10). Breaking free from pornography will happen!
First of all, we must recognize that on one hand, many thoughts come unsolicited, and are not wrong because they appear in our head, unannounced! On the other hand, when we linger on these thoughts, lustful ones for example, and muse over them, we have committed a sin—and need forgiveness. When we do sin like this, we need to simply ask the Lord for forgiveness.
What do you do with lustful thoughts when breaking free from pornography? As soon as the thought comes, follow these three steps:
- Be prepared for the “battle” by having a Bible verse ready that can be easily applied to the situation. For example, when Jesus was tempted by the devil to turn stones into bread, He quoted a verse from the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy: Thou shalt not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God!I suggest a man uses, Psalm 119:9: How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word and following its rules. Say it out loud to yourself!
- Next, personalize the verse, and make it your very own! How can I keep myself pure, Lord? If I obey your word, and follow your rules!
- Then, pray for a friend or family member who doesn’t know Jesus: Lord Jesus, I want to pray for my Uncle Joe right now—help his heart to be pure, and I pray he will come to know you as Lord and Saviour. Amen.
Make sure you use the same verse, and pray for the same person every time. In this way, you don’t have to “decide” what you’re going to do—it becomes automatic.
When temptation comes, immediately follow these steps. After a few weeks, your response will become automatic—and breaking free from pornography will be a reality!
